What are vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE)?
Enterococci are a family of bacteria that live harmlessly in the human gut and on the skin. The two species doctors see most often are Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Usually they cause no trouble, but if they get into the wrong place — a wound, the bloodstream, or the urinary tract — they can trigger infections that are difficult to treat.
What does “vancomycin-resistant” mean?
Vancomycin is a powerful antibiotic long relied on for serious infections caused by gut and skin bacteria. When enterococci are described as “vancomycin-resistant,” it means they can survive exposure to that drug, removing one of the main options clinicians reach for.
VRE is the most common form of drug-resistant enterococcus in hospitals today, and it is most often seen in Enterococcus faecium. More recently, researchers have also reported enterococci resisting carbapenems — so-called last-resort antibiotics — which narrows the options further still.
How is VRE different from CRE?
