Antibiotic resistance is one of the defining public-health challenges of our time. Fewer drugs left to use

Vancomycin was long a mainstay against enterococci. When a strain resists it, doctors must turn to a shrinking list of alternatives. The most recent reviews of difficult-to-treat enterococcal infections note that treatment failure is common and the pipeline of new antibiotics is limited.

Vulnerable patients are hit hardest

These infections most often affect people in intensive care units, those with weakened immune systems, patients who have had major surgery, and people with long hospital stays. For them, a resistant infection can turn a manageable stay into a life-threatening one.

Silent spread in healthcare settings

A person can carry resistant enterococci in their gut without feeling ill. That means the bacteria can travel from patient to patient on hands, equipment, or surfaces before anyone realizes there is a problem.

A growing, not a future, problem

While vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are still less common than VRE or CRE, reports are increasing worldwide. Surveillance data and hospital studies show that once these strains take hold, they are difficult to remove. That makes early awareness, careful antibiotic use, and rigorous infection control essential.
